Engadine is a suburb of Sydney, Australia's largest city. Engadine is surrounded by The Royal National Park to the east, and Heathcote National Park to the west. 34 kilometres by rail from the Sydney CBD, it is located between Loftus and Heathcote, and incorporates the localities of Engadine, Yarrawarrah, North Engadine and Woronora Heights. It is also part of the Sutherland Shire local government area. The suburb takes its name from the first farm in the area, named by its owners, The McAllister Family, after the Engadin Valley in Switzerland. Originally settled for grazing land, Engadine soon became a destination for camping and day-trips from the inner-Sydney suburbs. In the 1960's, the district was established as a residential area and the Crown Land was released for private purchase. The last of the remaining land-parcels was developed in the 1990's, becoming North Engadine (now known as Woronora Heights). Every year in November the Lions Club of Engadine runs the McAllister Day Annual Fete at Cooper Street Reserve to honour the family that originally settled in the area. Now residential, with some light industrial pockets, Engadine is considered to be a sought-after area to live (this has seen property values more than double between 1995 and 2005).
